An unanticipated population explosion had taken place along the L line in Brooklyn, as young people were driven out of Manhattan by high rents. Ridership on the L has tripled since 1990, to more than four hundred thousand trips a day. With C.B.T.C., capacity grew from fifteen trains an hour to twenty-four, and it is expected to go higher still.
