At about the same time he developed the roll puller, Barazone realized there was a need for fabric installers. “Everyone was afraid of the material,” he says today. So his wife started a fabric installation business and Barazone designed and built a machine that would make fabric installation easier and more foolproof. That was the Model 750, a heavy-duty mechanical or hydraulic folding and telescoping unit designed for mobility. It was the market’s first patented machine to aid fabric installation.

The work isn’t just mechanical. “It’s a culture,” Byford says. “That’s what we need to change.” But is it possible to change the culture of a century-old, unloved organization? I asked two senior executives at the Toronto Transit Commission, Gemma Piemontese and Joan Taylor, about Byford’s five-year tenure there. “Things will probably get worse before they get better,” Taylor said, meaning things here in New York. “That’s what happened in Toronto.”

It’s not uncommon for developers to borrow money to fund construction projects, but such deals are rigorously built around demand: Hospitals, airports, hotels, and apartment buildings are generally launched into well-established markets. The fact that lenders were willing to fund an extravagant and completely untested concept like Hard Rock Park epitomizes the mentality of the pre-crisis boom. As investment banker William Welnholfer told the Wall Street Journal in 2009: “Only in 2005 or 2006 could you raise this type of financing without some reasonable assurance that the business plan would work.”

The gym chain claims its hour-long workouts burn up to 1,000 calories an hour and to continue to burn calories for 36 hours afterwards through “afterburn” that stimulates the metabolism. The Florida-based high-intensity, high-interval training gym now has more than 600 locations across the United States.

But dwell time is a small problem compared with running time. New York’s subways are slower today than they were a century ago. Kyle Kirschling, a performance analyst at N.Y.C. Transit, met with Byford for the first time this spring, and told him that he believes most delays are caused by train operators simply driving too slowly. “There’s not enough emphasis on the idea that every second counts,” he said. “We need clear, objective rules for operators. Never stop longer than three seconds at a yellow. Don’t brake till you’re in the station. Go to full power straight out of the station.” Kirschling, a rawboned young man from Wisconsin, had written a master’s thesis at Columbia about long-term productivity decline in New York City’s mass transit. Byford enlisted him on the spot to help him develop a new fact-based delay-attribution system.
